White Mother to a Dark Race - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Margaret D. Jacobs خلاصه: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, indigenous communities in the United States and Australia suffered a common experience at the hands of state authorities: the removal of their children to institutions in the name of assimilating American Indians and protecting Aboriginal people. Although officially characterized as benevolent, these government policies often inflicted great trauma on indigenous families and ultimately served the settler nations’ larger goals of consolidating control over indigenous peoples and their lands. White Mother to a Dark Race takes the study of indigenous education and acculturation in new directions in its examination of the key roles white women played in these policies of indigenous child-removal. Government officials, missionaries, and reformers justified the removal of indigenous children in particularly gendered ways by focusing on the supposed deficiencies of indigenous mothers, the alleged barbarity of indigenous men, and the lack of a patriarchal nuclear family. Often they deemed white women the most appropriate agents to carry out these child-removal policies. Inspired by the maternalist movement of the era, many white women were eager to serve as surrogate mothers to indigenous children and maneuvered to influence public policy affecting indigenous people. Although some white women developed caring relationships with indigenous children and others became critical of government policies, many became hopelessly ensnared in this insidious colonial policy.

نویسندگان: afsaneh najmabadi خلاصه: Drawing from a rich array of visual and literary material from nineteenth-century Iran, this groundbreaking book rereads and rewrites the history of Iranian modernity through the lens of gender and sexuality. Peeling away notions of a rigid pre-modern Islamic gender system, Afsaneh Najmabadi provides a compelling demonstration of the centrality of gender and sexuality to the shaping of modern culture and politics in Iran and of how changes in ideas about gender and sexuality affected conceptions of beauty, love, homeland, marriage, education, and citizenship. She concludes with a provocative discussion of Iranian feminism and its role in that country's current culture wars. In addition to providing an important new perspective on Iranian history, Najmabadi skillfully demonstrates how using gender as an analytic category can provide insight into structures of hierarchy and power and thus into the organization of politics and social life.

نویسندگان: Robert DiYanni خلاصه: We are what we read, according to Robert DiYanni. Reading may delight us or move us; we may read for instruction or inspiration. But more than this, in reading we discover ourselves. We gain access to the lives of others, explore the limitless possibilities of human existence, develop our understanding of the world around us, and find respite from the hectic demands of everyday life. In You Are What You Read, DiYanni provides a practical guide that shows how we can increase the benefits and pleasures of literature by becoming more skillful and engaged readers. DiYanni suggests that we attend first to what authors say and the way in which they say it, rather than rushing to decide what they mean. He considers the various forms of literature, from the essay to the novel, the short story to the poem, demonstrating rewarding approaches to each in sample readings of classic works. Through a series of illuminating oppositions, he explores the paradoxical pleasures of reading: solitary versus social reading, submitting to or resisting the author, reading inwardly or outwardly, and more. DiYanni closes with nine recommended reading practices, thoughts on the different experiences of print and digital reading, and advice on what to read and why. Written in a clear, inviting, and natural style, You Are What You Read is an essential guide for all who want to enrich their reading—and their life.

Comparative Literature - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Henry Gifford خلاصه: Comparative Literature explores an 'area of interest' rather than a special discipline. The book begins with an account of the approaches that twentieth century writers took to literature by writers other than themselves. It discusses the common tone shared by those who subscribe to a national tradition, and considers what is meant by 'the mind of Europe'. It ponders the problems of translation, and discusses the nature of comparative study at university. Lastly, the special case of American literature is treated as pointing to the need for adjustment to a new stage in the world's culture. The criticial discussion of comparative studies provided in this book demonstrates the greater depth and vivacity that these studies can give to our ideas about literature.

The sociology of community connections - Original PDF
The sociology of community connections - Original PDF
نویسندگان: John G. Bruhn خلاصه: The Sociology of Community Connections is about how we interact and connect with one another as individuals and groups in a variety of social situations. We interact out of necessity and connect as a consequence of choice, and it is our connections that create community. Networks of communities that are interdependent, diverse, and responsive to change, yet cohesive, provide the infrastructure for a healthy society. In today's world, our societal infrastructure is continuously being tested by forces and demands that attempt to alter it, and thereby change the nature of how we connect within our various communities. We need to analyze these forces and demands and understand the impact they have on our connections so that, individually and collectively, we can create more social capital than we use. In the last decade, as the world has become smaller and more interdependent, the definition of community has changed. In our society--indeed, in the world--there seem to be more broken and fragmented relationships than in the past, an absence of connections where they appear to be needed, an uncertainty and lack of trust in relationships we have sustained, and a tendency to select, restrict, and even plan those connections that promote self-interest. This graduate-level text explains how our early connections and attachments are formed and discusses past and present conceptions of community. A major portion of the book describes how the sociology of connections takes place in a variety of communities such as: immigrant and ethnic communities, the fragmented communities of the poor and homeless, communities experiencing crises, communities of exclusion and excluded communities, religious communities, cyber communities and solitary communities. The Sociology of Community Connections is highly recommended for classes in sociology, social work, social and cultural anthropology, community psychology, communications, criminal justice, and urban planning.

The Quantification of Social Contacts and Resources - Original PDF
نویسندگان: Cathy Donald & John Ware خلاصه: This report presents the results from empirical tests of strategies for scoring social well-being items fielded by RAND's Health Insurance Experiment (HIE). Section II presents background material, a conceptual framework for social well-being measurements, an outline of measurement issues and strategies involved in quantifying questionnaire responses, and a summary of how other investigators have constructed social well-being measures. Section III describes the methodology used in the HIE. Sections IV and V present results of empirical analyses, recommend a scoring rule for each of the 11 HIE social well-being items, and describe the results of scaling analyses including descriptive statistics, interrelationships among measures, the reliability of resulting scores, associations between social well-being measures and selected sociodemographic and health variables, and effects of socially desirable responding on social well-being measures. Section VI discusses the findings and offers suggestions for future research based on the experiences with HIE measures.
